If you do decide to go this route, do not not take any chances with safety. Make sure the equipment you are considering is checked out by a certified rigger. Riggers are trained to spot any kind of wear or defect that will affect the quality and safety of the equipment. Even after you have bought your equipment, you should make sure your parachute it is packed by a certified rigger; this is the only way you will be assured that it will open safely.

There are a lot of reasons to buy used equipment. Many people move up in a sport and want more or different features in their equipment. The number one thing that you have to get, once you have got your kayak, is a kayak helmet. There are many different manufacturers out there like WRSI Helmets or Predator Helmets. The main thing that you have to remember is that you cannot base your purchase on style alone. Granted that you can get them in various colors and styles, but you have to get one that suits your head the best.

They are made up of three parts. A shell which is the hard outer part of the helmet, a lining which is basically foam that is on the inside of the helmet and is over the head directly, and last but most important of all, the strap which helps keep the helmet firmly on the kayaker’s head.

There are different kinds are available in the market now. They may have different outer appearances, but the basics of these helmets remain the same. There is the full cut kayak helmet and there is the half cut kayak helmet, which rests just above the ears of the wearer. Full cut helmets are better, as they have an outer shell protection for the ears. And by extension, this helmet also as it comes down over the ear, offers more protection for the temple area of the head.

Half cut helmets don’t really offer much protection, and are much looser than the full cut style. They do tend to be more comfortable on the down side. More and more people are choosing to go with the half cut helmet out of sheer convenience these days, over safety. When you are choosing what kind of helmet you want, you should also decide on what kind of material you are comfortable with that has the best wear and fit to it.

The strongest kinds of kayak helmets are made from Kevlar, carbon fiber or composite polymers. The weakest kind of kayak helmets are made from plastic, these somehow have a one up on the stronger ones, as they have been used for the longest when whitewater rafting. Your helmet should fit you snugly as well as comfortably. It shouldn’t be too tight, or it will give you a headache. It shouldn’t be too loose either, or it can just be pushed off your head with the water going over it. Ideally there shouldn’t be a gap between the lining and your head, when you are wearing a kayak helmet.
